KATIE SURRIDGE (b. 1985) is a London based artist working with sculpture. Surridge graduated from the Slade School of Fine Art in 2010 and recently completed her MFA at Goldsmiths. Surridge spent three years training as a Blacksmith at the National school of blacksmithing and now runs her own forge and metal workshop in Essex. Surridge’s work is a testament to the enduring power of the hand made in a rapidly evolving digital world. Known for her aversion to modern technology, Surridge revels in the grit of metalworking and blacksmithing, finding a deeper connection to her work through this direct, hands-on approach. Surridge’s practice challenges the conventional distinction between art and craft, drawing inspiration from folklore and historical techniques. Blending elements from the past with contemporary references, Surridge creating a unique "historical mash-up". Humorously critiquing modern societal tropes such as dating apps and binge drinking, Surridge offers a fresh and thought-provoking perspective on contemporary life.
